How Your Garden can Improve Home Security

When you think about home security, you probably think of technology such as CCTV or a burglar alarm. But the outside of your home can be a deterrent to criminals, or an invitation.

Making your garden unattractive to burglars is a relatively affordable way to improve security. Think of it as your first line of defence, and put it to work.

Plant thorny boundaries

Fences are easy to climb. Dense, thorny hedges are far harder to get over and can stop a criminal from even trying. Add a trellis and thorny climbing roses to a fence, or grow berberis or blackthorn along the boundary. You get privacy and a barrier that looks good too.

Keep it tidy

A large garden is hard to maintain, but an unruly one is a haven for burglars. Overgrown bushes, skips and debris create ideal hiding places, so a tidy garden helps security as well as appearance. Keep shrubs near windows and doors trimmed so nobody can work unseen.

Garden security checklist

  • Thorny plants along fences and boundaries
  • Shrubs near doors and windows kept low
  • Motion-sensor lighting front and back
  • Shed and garage locked, with ladders and tools put away

Fit outdoor lighting

Security lights with motion sensors switch on as someone approaches the house. That can alert you to an intruder before a break-in, or warn your neighbours if you’re out. Most burglaries happen under cover of darkness, so good lighting is one of the most effective additions you can make.

Lock up your shed

Even if there’s nothing valuable inside, lock the shed. Without a lock you give intruders access to tools and equipment they can steal, or use to break into your home. Never leave ladders lying around either, as they offer an easy route to upstairs windows.

Real CCTV, fully installed from £699HD cameras, phone viewing and up to 30 days of recording.

Add technology to back it up

A well-kept garden works best alongside electronic protection. CCTV covering the garden and approaches, and an intruder alarm inside, give you layers that make your home security far harder to beat. When you’re protecting your property and family, don’t forget the garden: it’s the first entrance.
