When the clocks go back, the hours of darkness grow and so does the risk of a break-in. Christmas stock and extra takings make commercial premises particularly appealing.
Winter is one of the worst times of year for break-ins. Dark, quiet evenings mean less chance of being seen, and criminals are opportunists. Follow these tips to keep your business off their list.
Minimise weaknesses
Thieves look for weak points. If one business has visible CCTV and an intruder alarm and the one next door doesn’t, it’s obvious which they’ll go for. Make sure your systems both deter criminals and draw attention if the property is breached. And never rely on fake CCTV cameras, because professionals know the difference.
Don’t tempt criminals
A thin pane of glass between a shop window full of expensive items and an experienced burglar is asking for trouble. A festive window display is tempting, but it also advertises what’s inside. Remove valuable items from sight, and ideally take them home or lock them away when you’re closed.
Burglars look for opportunity. Visible security, and nothing valuable on show, sends them elsewhere.
Check your insurance
Even with good security, a planned attack by a group can sometimes succeed. Prepare for the worst by making sure your business insurance is up to date and valid, with high-value items listed so they can be replaced after a break-in.
Use off-site storage
Many businesses keep excess stock or data backups off-site. You can’t always move computers and servers, but you should back up your business data elsewhere so you can keep trading. If you hold extra high-value stock at this time of year, keep it in a secure warehouse or holding facility until it’s needed in store.
