Choosing a CCTV system means deciding how many cameras you need and where they go, and that’s only the start. You also have to choose between wired or wireless, colour or black and white, and a range of resolutions. Unless you’re an expert, it can get confusing.
Here’s a straightforward guide to the main choices and which suits which situation.
Camera style: dome or bullet
Most systems use dome or bullet cameras. Domes are small and round, and are usually fitted to ceilings indoors. Bullet cameras are more noticeable and wall-mounted, which can itself act as a visible deterrent.
Picture: colour, black and white, and HD
Colour is now an option, but it doesn’t always give the best picture. Where light is low, black and white is usually the better choice unless the camera has built-in night vision.
On resolution, modern systems offer HD recording, which is much sharper than older analogue footage and gives you a clearer view of who’s on your property.
Wired or wireless, and how you view it
There’s not a big difference in image quality between wired and wireless, but wireless is simpler and quicker to install. Wired is still a solid option where a reliable connection matters.
Traditionally, footage went to a digital video recorder (DVR) on a hard drive, linked to a monitor. That works well for large commercial buildings with many feeds viewed in one security room. Many systems now also offer remote viewing, so you can watch live images on a laptop or phone from anywhere.
Questions to ask before you decide
- How many areas need covering, and where are the weak points?
- Is the lighting good enough, or do you need night vision?
- Do you want to view footage remotely?
- How easy is cabling at your property?
