Police crime prevention advice notes that homes with no security measures are far more likely to be targeted by burglars than those with even simple protection. A small investment can save you and your family the devastation of a break-in.
Anybody can fall victim to a burglary, so it makes sense to lower the odds wherever you can. These are the home security measures we’d suggest considering.
Outdoor lighting
Burglars need to stay unseen, so they tend to avoid homes with good exterior lighting. Many people light the front door but not the back, which leaves an opportunity. Light all sides of the house so nobody can cross your grounds without being noticed.
A safe
If you own high-value items, or things of sentimental worth, a safe gives you peace of mind. It can be fitted in a wardrobe or another hidden spot, with entry protected by a key, a PIN code or even a fingerprint.
An intruder alarm
Fit an intruder alarm and make sure it’s visible from outside. It discourages burglars from trying, and increases the chance of them being caught if they do. Modern alarms can cover the whole property, and can be left on even when pets are roaming the house.
CCTV
CCTV is another dual-purpose measure: it deters and it records. Cameras can cover both the inside and outside of your property, and advances in technology have brought the cost of CCTV systems down. Because they link to your phone, you can check in when you’re away.
Making it look as though someone is at home can be all it takes for a burglar to try somewhere else.
Timers on your devices
An easy, low-cost option is to put lamps or a kitchen radio on timers. If you’re out for the evening, a light that comes on at dusk gives the impression of a household in residence.
