CCTV is there to protect property and keep people safe. But because it records round the clock, it also catches some very funny moments, from innocent accidents to what pets get up to when they think nobody is watching.
Here’s a roundup of some of the funniest things caught on camera.
The ‘Pawshank Redemption’
Some of the best clips come from ordinary homes with pets. In this award-winning one, a small dog makes a dramatic escape over a barrier to get out of the kitchen. The soundtrack makes it. Watch it on YouTube.
The bungling burglar
Being burgled is no joke, but this Texas homeowner saw the funny side after his CCTV caught the thief taking ages to get in, then being handcuffed and led out by police. Add a ‘Mission Impossible’ theme and it’s hard not to smile. Watch the clip.
A comical car wash
A father asked his teenage son to wash the car, then checked the CCTV to see whether he’d taken it for a spin. Instead he found the lad dancing his way through the chore. The story went viral and was covered by the Daily Mail.
Footage is there for security first. A good laugh is a bonus.
Drunk Santa
This one shows Santa clearly having had a few. Our favourite moment is when he falls over, hits a car and still manages to straighten his hat straight away. It features in a top 10 of funny CCTV clips on YouTube.
Your own footage
When you install CCTV at home or work, the main benefit is security, and sometimes you get something to laugh about too. If you’ve ever watched back your own footage and howled, we’d love to hear about it. Just remember to respect other people’s privacy before sharing anything online.
