If you live in a block of flats or shared building, you need the right security in place to protect your home. Entry systems such as key fobs and door codes help, but they are easily bypassed: a thief can simply wait for someone to leave and slip in behind them.
Once inside, there is often only one door between a burglar and your belongings, and a basic lock can be picked quickly. Here is how to strengthen your flat.
Install an intruder alarm
An intruder alarm gives you peace of mind whether you’re asleep or out. If it goes off, it will be heard throughout the block, which is usually enough to scare off a burglar who doesn’t want to be caught. A modern wireless system can be fitted with minimal disruption, and pet-friendly options are available if you’re worried about a cat or dog setting it off.
Ask for CCTV at the entrance
If your block doesn’t have cameras at the entrance, ask your landlord or property management team to install them. A CCTV system helps residents feel safer, and you have a strong case to make. Get your neighbours involved, perhaps with a petition or a Neighbourhood Watch group, so your request carries more weight.
Fit extra locks
One standard lock isn’t enough to keep an experienced criminal out. If you don’t already have one, fit a door chain or limiter, plus additional locks that are harder to pick. Check with your landlord first if you rent, and make sure any changes meet your insurer’s requirements.
Flat security basics
- Never let strangers follow you through the entrance door
- Always lock your front door, even for a quick trip to the bins
- Keep valuables away from windows and balconies
- Know your neighbours and report anything suspicious
