Experienced burglars don’t pick houses at random. They weigh up several factors before deciding which property to target, and their aim is simple: take the most valuable items without getting caught.

That means you need to look at your home the way a criminal would. What clues are you giving away, and how could you be making their job easier?

An open invitation

Open windows, open sheds and unlocked garages are all seen as invitations. Burglars are opportunists: even if you leave the back door open while gardening at the side of the house, they could be in and out in thirty seconds. Keep every door and window locked, even when you’re at home.

Signs the property is empty

Burglars like to know a house is unoccupied so they have longer to work. No vehicles outside, curtains permanently closed and post piling up are the classic giveaways when you’re on holiday. Use timers, and ask a neighbour to keep things looking normal.

If your house doesn’t visibly have any security measures, it could be seen as an easy job.

A small chance of being caught

Visible security makes a burglar’s life harder. An intruder alarm can alert neighbours and keyholders during a break-in, and CCTV can identify the people responsible and provide evidence for court.

Hiding places and obvious spare keys

Burglars don’t like being seen, so they look for cover on the approach to the house. Overgrown bushes let them lurk in the shadows, and with no exterior lighting they’ll be delighted. Trim shrubs back and fit motion-sensor lights.

Spare keys are another weakness. Criminals know every hiding place in the book, from under the mat to inside the plant pot, so it’s not worth the risk. If you must leave a key somewhere, leave it with a trusted neighbour.
