Whether your worry is theft, vandalism or anti-social behaviour, the aim is the same: make your property a less attractive target than the one next door. Deterrents are often simple and affordable, and they can be the difference between a break-in and a quiet night.
Criminals tend to be opportunists. They look for easy access, valuables on show and little chance of being seen or caught. Here are five practical ways to tip the odds in your favour.
Make it likely they’ll get caught
Burglars have one thing in common: they don’t want to be caught. That means they actively seek out properties where the risk is low and the rewards are easy.
Visible, well-placed CCTV on the outside of your property, and inside where appropriate, is one of the most effective ways to make an intruder think twice. If something does happen, you also have footage to pass to the police and your insurer.
Show that you take security seriously
Cameras and an intruder alarm do two jobs. They help to raise the alarm if someone does try to get in, and they act as a visible warning beforehand. A professionally fitted alarm box and clear signage tell a would-be burglar that your property is protected and is probably best avoided.
A dog can also help. Many intruders dislike the noise and unpredictability of a dog in the house, and a “dog on premises” sign can add to the message.
Most burglars aren’t looking for a challenge. They’re looking for the easiest door on the street.
Don’t advertise what you own
It sounds obvious, but a car parked on the drive with the keys in view, or a large TV and games console visible from the window, can invite unwanted attention. Where you can, use a garage for vehicles, and position valuables away from windows. Close blinds or curtains when you’re out, particularly as the evenings draw in.
Make the property look occupied
Empty homes are attractive to burglars because there’s no one to disturb them. Plug lamps and a radio into inexpensive timers so that lights and sound come on at sensible times, and ask a neighbour to clear post and deliveries if you’re away. Outdoor lighting at entry points also helps, as most intruders prefer to work unseen.
Layer your defences
No single measure is perfect, which is why layers work best: good locks, lighting, sensible habits, an alarm and cameras all reinforce one another.
